Empowering Girls Digitally Through Social Media

There are approximately 2.2% of total population having access to internet. Among them 0.85 Million are Facebook users of which 0.59 million users are male and 0.26 million are female (www.tech.aakarpost.com ). This is the sad reality of Nepal where only 2.2% of total Nepalese people are able to use internet and another sad part is women are far behind than men in terms of internet access.

Facebook has become the most common social media among the internet users. Specially teenagers are found addicted to it. The problem is that they are not using it wisely. Social media can be a strong tool or medium for them to shape their personality, build their career and much more. I have a eighteen years old sister and I usually find her busy in her Facebook clicking 'like' button in her friends' and celebrities' pictures. She has no idea that there are other social media tools which can be very useful for her academics and shaping her career as well. She is just spending her time in unproductive things which I really wish to change. And there might be girls like her in hundreds!

After the 2 weeks training  at Code For Nepal I understood the real advantage and usefulness of social media which I want to share with teenagers like my sister and make them realize the real value and usefulness of social media. I want to motivate the young girls to utilize the internet and social media for building their personality, shaping their career and encourage them to showcase their hidden talents, knowledge and experience in a global platform.

To achieve this target we (Me and Christina Nakarmi) are planning to organize a week long digital  training to the teenage girls (13-19 years old). Our main objective is to enhance their digital skills by providing knowledge regarding social media and its effective use.

Success doesn't come the easy way.  Challenges and problems will definitely come in our way but we are determined to accomplish our work and at least inspire some teenagers to utilize social media for their personal and career growth. Though we are not professionals, we are daring to conduct this training program. We are also expecting some help from our seniors, mentors (Code For Nepal), colleagues and friends to make this training program possible and also successful one.

Leadership- Empowering others!

Leadership is all about taking responsibility and carrying out the work elegantly to transform vision into reality.

"Leader become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others"- John Maxwell. I totally agree with Mr. Maxwell as I believe that leadership is all about leading others towards advancement and making them leaders. Its all about setting an example, a good example!

A person should possess some exemplary characteristics and qualities to be renowned as a leader. He/she should be confident, proactive, honest, trustworthy, source of inspiration, motivator, organized, patient, initiator, and good communicator. Besides these unique qualities a leader should also be open to change.

Leadership has become an essential part of every individuals life. You need be a leader of your own life to become successful or to secure a better future. You need be a leader to lead your own life in a better way. We face different challenges and problems every time and facing those challenges bravely is leadership. Being positive in difficult situation is leadership. Leadership is not a position to acquire, it is an action or example. You should believe that you can be that example!

There are some views shared by people in social media on leadership.

How long should we wait for Justice???

How long should we really wait for justice?    When will we see the face of real justice?

Its already been more than a year since the Occupy Baluwatar campaign ignited in our country but with no result as expected. Its really a shame that the government whose one of the important responsibilities is to protect women from violence has now turned deaf and blind towards the issues of women violence. So how can we expect women to be safe in a country where she gets victimized  by the government officials!

The movement should be continued and should be made even stronger until the victims get the proper justice and the criminals must face the charges they deserve no matter who they are. I really appreciate and feel proud of the campaigners who are raising their voices against women violence and I want to give my full support to such campaigns.

Not the mere words and fake promise, what we want is JUSTICE!!

Stucked!!

"Sorry! I am stuck in traffic so I will be late". Almost every day we have to repeat the same statement to our friends, relatives or employer due to the heavy traffic in the streets/roads of Kathmandu. Traffic congestion has become a major problem for city dwellers due the increasing private vehicles and narrow roads.

Traffic congestion, not only cause delays and waste of time, it also wastes fuel, increases air pollution and vehicles get deteriorated very fast. It also encourages road rage and accidents due the stressed and frustrated motorist and drivers. Heavy traffic becomes the real headache in the time of emergency. There are numerous problems caused by the traffic congestion in our lives directly or indirectly. Traffic congestion has become a major challenge in most of the cities of Nepal.

The possible solutions for this problem can be to improve the present traffic management system, building bridges, increase public vehicles by providing incentives and encourage people to use public vehicles, effective urban planning, well managed parking system, and manage sidewalks for the pedestrians.

Effective and well managed traffic system will certainly make the public life easier and comfortable and ultimately increases the efficiency at their work.

First Day at Code For Nepal - Knowing a classmate closely!!

My first day at the digital and social media management training organized by Code For Nepal was awesome. As a part of training assignment I got an opportunity to interview one of my classmates which helped me to know her better. So here is a brief introduction of my classmate Miss Phurlamu Sherpa.

A young and enthusiastic girl who hails from Tatopani, Sindhupalchowk and at present resides in Jorpati, Kathmandu  is a business studies student at WLC college, Kathmandu. She loves music and to hangout with friends during her leisure time and also loves to travel. Her aim is to become a successful business woman in Nepal. She is a very cheerful person who always wears a smile on her face. But when i asked her about her sad moment in her life she sadly expressed that she misses her parents very much. Her parents are in the US since 2001 A.D. and she desperately wishes to be with them. She also wants to go US for abroad studies. She likes to engage herself in social works and has already volunteered for different social organizations. And finally when i asked her where do you wish to go before you die, she smiled and said Norway and gave the reason that she wants to experience six months of days and six months of nights.

Day 1: The Begining!

Starting a blog was a bit confusing thing for me initially as I thought there is nothing to write about. But I realized that I can write only when i really start to write. Writing is not my cup of coffee, I have always tried to avoid it but writing can be a beautiful work to do and is not as hard as most of us think. Well this is my first step towards being a better writer (finger crossed!). And during this journey I hope I will be able to write something interesting and worth sharing.. :)
